After you leave the doctor’s office with a prescription in your hand, do you know what to do? Do you know what information you should ask for when you receive a new medication from your local pharmacy?

Experts say you should agree to a pharmacist consultation about any drugs you’ve never taken before. Here are some things that you should ask during your consultation:

1. Make sure you know how and when to take the medication so, if you are at all unclear, ask.

2. Ask if you should avoid certain foods or beverages, and if your herbal remedy may cause a drug reaction.

3. If your doctor did not specify, ask your pharmacist to explain why you are being prescribed your medication.

4. Always ask about possible side effects and if you need to avoid strenuous exercise or driving.

5. Ask what you should do if you miss a dose. This is particularly important as “doublingup” is often dangerous.

Let the pharmacist know of any home herbal remedies, health supplements, vitamins, over-the-counter or alternative medications you are taking. Having a clear understanding of your drug history allows the pharmacist to give you better guidance.

Also, it is always a good idea to check the name on the bottle before you leave the pharmacy. although rare, mistakes do happen and taking this easypreventativemeasure could save you a lot of frustration.

At home, take your medication as prescribed and finish the entire bottle. If you feel better, that is because the medication is working, but it is not an excuse to discontinue the drug.

Remember to go to the same pharmacy for each prescription that needs to be filled. Your pharmacy keeps records of all your medications, drug interactions, allergies and other information to give you the best service and protect your health.
